About Winnie
Winnie M Li is an author, activist, and rape survivor. Her debut novel, Dark Chapter, is winner of The Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize 2017 and will be translated into eight languages worldwide. Partly inspired by her own assault, it explores a rape from the perspective of both victim and perpetrator.
A Harvard graduate, Winnie is now Co-Founder of the Clear Lines Festival, the UK’s first-ever festival addressing sexual assault and consent through the arts and discussion. She is also a PhD researcher at the London School of Economics, researching the uses of social media by rape survivors to share their experiences. Winnie has appeared in The Guardian, The Mail on Sunday, The Times, The Independent, The Irish Times, BBC World News, BBC Woman’s Hour, and RTE Radio One, among other media outlets.

During UK SAYS NO MORE Week last year, marking the 1st anniversary of the launch of the campaign, Winnie hosted a brilliant pre-launch book party event alongside us, during which she read out sections from her debut novel Dark Chapter and held an engaging discussion with the audience afterwards. Dark Chapter, which enabled Winnie to process the aftermath of her attack, works incredibly well to provoke thought and create informative, in-depth discussion, so we’re sure you’ve got lots of questions at the ready.
We’ll be promoting the #AskWinnie hashtag during the week and during the hour itself, so there’s plenty of time to get your questions together.
Light Up The Night
Tonight (Monday 5th February), we’ll also be attending Light Up The Night to mark Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, with the Millennium Bridge in London lighting up between 6-7pm in solidarity with survivors. If you fancy coming along, meet us outside Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre at 5:45PM – bring glow sticks!
