About Galop
Galop is the LGBT anti-violence charity, making life safe, just and fair for LGBT people.
What Galop Does
Galop gives advice and support to people who have experienced biphobia, homophobia, transphobia, sexual violence or domestic abuse. We also support lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people who have had problems with the police or have questions about the criminal justice system.
Galop is completely independent – we are a community-led group and we are not connected to police. You can talk to us anonymously if you choose. This page describes how Galop can help you and the services we provide, but it’s not exhaustive. For more information contact us on 020 7704 2040.
How Can Galop Help?
If you need advice, or just want to get something off your chest, you can talk to us. Galop is a space to talk and get options, even when you feel there aren’t any. We’ll never pressure you into taking any action you aren’t comfortable with and we won’t share information about you unless you want us to.
You may have already tried to get help from the police or others. You may not be sure what’s happening or you’re dissatisfied with the response. We can fight your corner, help get what you need or record what happened.
Galop can advocate for you – meaning we’ll act on your behalf and try our hardest to get you the outcome you want. Advocacy involves speaking up for you with other organisations such as the police or local council.
HATE CRIME
Hate crime can include verbal or written abuse, harassment and violence. Galop can give you a space to talk, help you get what you want from the police, negotiate with your housing provider or find you legal advice. If you want the police to know, we can make a report for you and liaise with the police on your behalf. If you prefer, you can make a report anonymously.
ABUSE AT HOME
Abuse from family, partners, and ex-partners happens in our community. Galop is a safe space to talk and think about what you want away from pressure at home. We can help you explore your options, plan to make you safer, look for safe housing and speak with the police.
SEXUAL ABUSE & VIOLENCE
Galop helps people who have been forced into sex, didn’t agree to what happened or are unsure how they feel about it. That might be from a stranger or someone you know well. We won’t pressure you and are led by what you want.
PROBLEMS WITH THE POLICE
The police have made huge leaps forward, but things don’t always go the way they should. Galop can help put problems right with the police. We can give advice and options or make a formal complaint on your behalf.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
Galop can help if you have questions about criminal convictions or are concerned about Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. We can also support you if you have to go to court as a victim or witness, and we can make a criminal injuries compensation claim on your behalf.
